'Almost every culture has a squash of some sort,' Linda Cline said.
The Clines this year planted 50 varieties of pumpkins and 70 varieties of squash and gourds to keep up with customer tastes.
'Flea-ing' pumpkins
It's that end of the business that has led Pumpkin Hill to open its sales season for many years at the Springfield Flea Market and Antique Show September Extravaganza.
The designer pumpkins, squashes and gourds usually depart the shelves like flying saucers (a kind of gourd) at the Extravaganza.
When the event is over, business switches over to the front lawn of the family farm.
Over the years, the Clines have watched children of repeat customers grow up and, sometimes, become part of the staff.
